How does massage help with mental health?  & What advice would you offer someone who is showing signs of mental stress- give examples of what they can do before the massage, during the massage, and after the massage to relieve stress and anxiety?

Massage therapy is an incredible tool that offers powerful mental health benefits by helping reduce stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue.  During a massage, your body releases endorphins, natural “feel-good” chemicals in the brain that act as mood boosters and stress relievers.  These endorphins promote a sense of calm, improve overall emotional well-being and with a few mindful steps before, during and after you massage, you can make the most of its benefits.

  • Before your massage it is very important to set an intention for your session—whether it’s to release tension, quiet your mind, or simply allow yourself to rest, set your intention for the outcome of your massage session.  Also try to arrive a little early to give yourself time to settle in and transition from a busy mindset to a relaxed one.

  • During the massage, focus on being present. Let go of racing thoughts by paying attention to your breathing and noticing how your body feels. If you need more or less pressure, don’t hesitate to communicate with me so your session is as comfortable and effective as possible.

  • After your massage, drink plenty of water, take a few minutes to stretch gently, and give yourself permission to ease back into your day slowly. Avoid immediately diving back into stressful tasks and allow your body and mind to enjoy the calm you’ve created.

What are some underrated massage techniques that you believe in and advocate?

Although it is not a massage technique, I often ask the clients, “Are you being kind to yourself?” because so many of us carry the weight of daily stress, responsibilities, and challenges without taking the time to care for our own well-being. Being kind to yourself is about giving your body and mind permission to rest, recharge, and heal. Massage isn’t just about relaxing your muscles, it’s about nurturing your entire self. A reminder that you have to be kind to yourself is massage after-care homework.

Can you determine a client's physical and mental health when working on them? How?

I can get a glimpse into a client's physical and mental health while working on them.  During the massage, muscle tension, restricted movement, breathing patterns, and sensitivity to pressure can reveal signs of physical strain or emotional stress.  The client’s body language, energy levels, and overall response to touch can also indicate how they are feeling mentally and physically.  By opening communication with the client I can tailor each session to meet their unique session needs, helping with both physical relief and emotional well-being.

***Bonus Statement***

After a massage session clients OFTEN say “I almost fell asleep” or ask “did I fall asleep?” Some even apologize if they feel themselves dozing off.

Falling asleep during your massage is totally normal and completely welcomed.  Massage therapy calms your nervous system, lowers stress, and releases those “feel-good” endorphins, creating the perfect recipe for deep relaxation.  If you drift off, it simply means your body is letting go, recharging, and receiving exactly what it needs.  So go ahead, relax, unwind, and if you nap, I will take it as a compliment.
